According to Rowling the main theme is death, due to Harry's parents death. To save Harry Potter his parent sacrifices themselves and cast a spell on Harry. Voldemort wanted to be the greatest wizard of them all and wanted to conquer immortal, because of a prophecy he wanted to kill Harry Potter.
